Gillenbah State Forest Narrandera

Detail of cypress 'leaves'

This a fairly open Pine-box forest with understorey of acacia hop bush and eriostemon and native grasses and herbs. Some is evidence of logging in the past.

Access: Travel south of Narrandera, turn west as if going to Hay, then turn south again on the Jerilderie Road. Travel south for 11 km following the disused Tocumwal railway line, past 2 rest areas. Travel one more km and look for a road to your right over the railway, then over a cattle grid. Travel on a sandy road for 1 km following the fence. You will come to a dam. Walk from here or drive carefully along the sandy tracks.

A lovely feel-good forest, with tall trees of bimble and grey box, understorey of 4 different acacias, hop bush, eriostemon and senna. Native grasses and herbs and orchids in spring.

Birds to see: Honeyeaters, robins, parrots thornbills.

There are no facilities.

Lichen breaks down old timber Tall trees still exist despite logging Gillenbah is a good example of a mixed woodland
