G.P.S.    34 – 45 – 7             146 – 32 – 52

Excavation of Narrandera Wetlands commenced in April 2005 to filter town storm water before it entered the Murrumbidgee River, making use of the old Narrandera sewage works located on the Newel Highway between the Murrumbidgee River and the main irrigation channel.

Narrandera Wetlands was instigated by Narrandera Land Care Group and with the help of the Shire Council received funding with State government grants for developing the wetlands.

After construction was completed thousands of native water plants & ground trees have been planted with the help of the local schools & volunteers making it an ideal place for water birds. Mammals sighted have been Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Swamp Wallabies, Koalas and Echidnas.

Up to date there is a walking track around the wetlands with a bridge over the outlet with still another bridge to go over the inlet and bird hides to be erected when funds become available. Around the walking track are large rocks for resting on and observing the wildlife. There are interpretive signs also around the walking track. Remains of the old sewage works are still visible.

At this the time no facilities are available at this site though over the other side of the Newell Highway at Brewery Flats there is overnight camping for Motor Homes with toilets & picnic tables available. The town shopping center is only 1 km away. There are 2 caravan parks and many hotels and motels and also bed & breakfast venues in Narrandera.
