Round Hill / Yathong / Nombinnie Nature Reserves

Cactus Pea in flower at Round Hill Nature Reserve

Together these three Nature Reserves represent a huge chunk of mallee and related communities and provide excellent habitat for a range of dry area birds. Round Hill is best known for the Red Lored Whistler sightings and Shepherd's Hill has a pair of Peregrine Falcons. In spring, the wildflowers are fabulous, but it worth a trip at any time of year.

Water is scarce in the reserves so any place with surface water provides good opportunity to see birds. There are a number of roadside water diversions that provide these opportunities. The best that I have found are on the eastern side of Round Hill on the Euablaong Rd (almost as soon as the road levels again) and along the railway line west of the Lake Cargelligo - Mt Hope Rd.

Nature Reserves are not generally open to the public, so if you want to visit, you should talk to the Cobar office of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife office on 02 6836 2692.
