Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists
Wetlands in the region can be both land depressions in an otherwise non draining basin or associated with rivers. They range from storage areas of the Murrumbidgee River (like Gogeldrie Weir) through to the Lake Wyangan System and Barren Box Swamp. All are worth a visit.
Lake Wyangan System - a series of blackbox depressions within 5kms of Griffith NSW. These depressions are now used for water storage, recreation and as bird sanctuary.
Narrandera Wetlands - on the Newell Highway just south of town. Worth a stop and a walk to stretch the legs after a long drive.
Barren Box Swamp - once a water storage area with horrific evaporation rates, now an outstanding engineering success that has irrigators and environmentalists happy.
